The Reaffirming Handshake

ree

I decided to write a poem because this is how I can best express my thoughts and feelings about reaffirmation. It is a process of trusting who you are and remembering how far you’ve come to be here.

I am actively pursuing a career goal and sometimes I feel deflated when I see that progress is slow, especially on days where I choose to rest or do nothing. There are moments where I find myself beating myself down with negative self-talk and unnecessary comparisons.

But I am reminded that by trusting myself it’ll be all okay, because as long as I choose to keep walking down my path, I will eventually get to my destination.

Do you remember the time

When you were a child,

It was time to sleep

And the lights went out.

You were under your blanket, holding it tight

Afraid of monsters in the night

Under your bed, behind the door

Above your head, your mind keeps score.

Did you shiver? Did you cry?

Did you feed your fear and let it eat you alive?

But even then, as you lay and rest

You feel inside your chest,

That your courage never went to rest.

Now that you’re older

You grew wiser, you grew kind.

You sought the truth that got left behind.

Deep inside, the child still lives in you.

A warrior brave, and gentle too.

When lights go out

Do you still hear the shadows shout?

I bet you don’t.

Because you learned that darkness could be your friend.

Not a silence, not an end.
